Lutron shading systems
The Challenge
This project involved a century home with a modern rear addition, creating a complex blend of traditional and contemporary architecture. The primary challenge was in the west-facing master bedroom, where the client required complete blackout for sleep and daytime privacy, while remaining highly sensitive to light.
The installation space presented a significant constraint. The dual ceiling pocket available for the shading system measured only 5 7/8” deep by 4” in height, which was well below the manufacturer's standard requirements. In addition, the project included triangular windows on the north and south elevations, requiring a non-standard approach to shading.
The Solution
Brading engineered a fully customized system to meet both spatial and performance requirements. Within the extremely tight ceiling cavity, six individual shades were installed, comprising three blackout shades and three sunscreen shades. This required custom fabrication of both the hardware and the bracketing system, as standard systems could not fit within the available space. For the triangular windows, Brading adapted Lutron shading systems for non-rectangular applications, modifying the system to suit the geometry of the space. Close collaboration with the architect was essential throughout the process. Multiple on-site meetings were held to refine the installation, reduce light gaps, and optimize the positioning and performance of the blackout materials.
The Outcome
The final installation delivered precise light control tailored to the client's needs, achieving both complete blackout and effective daytime privacy in a highly constrained environment. Through custom engineering and detailed coordination with the design team, Brading exceeded standard system limitations and provided a solution that was both technically advanced and seamlessly integrated into the architecture. This project reflects a high level of problem-solving, drawing on experience, material knowledge, and precision execution.
